Assisting LDCs to mainstream climate change adaptation into planning
Many Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are working to identify technical, institutional and financial needs to integrate climate change adaptation into medium and long-term national planning processes. UNDP, UNEP, and partners from the UN System (FAO, UNITAR, UNFCCC and others) as well as GIZ and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) are assisting this process through the National Adaptation Plan Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP).

COP20 Lima Side event on NAPs

A side event entitled 'National Adaptation Planning – Preparing least developed countries to address climate risk' will take place at  COP20 in Lima, on Thursday 4 December 2014, 1.15-2.45pm, Paracas Room. NAP-GSP is supporting the Government of Niger, Clean Energy Nepal, and the Comité permanent inter-états de lutte contre la sécheresse au Sahel (CILSS) for this event. Simultaneous English/French translation and refreshments are provided.

NAPs for the Pacific LDCs

The Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), in collaboration with the NAP-GSP, conducted a training workshop on NAPs for the Pacific LDCs from 3 to 7 November 2014, in Port Villa, Vanuatu. The workshop is the first in the round of regional training workshops to be conducted by the LEG as part of its work programme for 2014. The Pacific training incorporated core materials on NAPs, examples of NAP processes, case studies, demonstrations, exercises and a field trip.

Malawi NAP team take the lead to advance their NAP Process

Malawi officially launched their NAP process in September 2014, attended by the Principal Secretary responsible for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Yanira Mtupanyama. More than 40 stakeholders from government, Civil Society Organisations and networks in the relevant sectors took part in subsequent NAP workshop, led by the Government of Malawi and organised by the national NAP team. Support was provided by the National Climate Change Programme, UNDP Country Office and GWP. Technical assistance was provided by NAP-GSP, UNDP and GIZ.

Broad support for mobilising the NAP Process in DRC

The Congolese government has taken part in capacity-building and dialogue to advance their NAP process. A NAP awareness and mobilization workshop was held at the Cercle Elaïs in Kinshasa, DRC from 1 to 3 October, 2014, led by the Government of DRC, and organised by the national NAP team with support from the UNDP Country Office and NAP-GSP. Stakeholders and participants discussed institutional arrangements for mainstreaming and institutionalisation of the NAP process, as well as key sectoral priorities and components of the NAP in DRC. Approximately 50 participants attended the workshop from Government ministries, civil society groups, academic institutions, and technical and financial partner organisations.

Climate change adaptation 'crucial to sustainable development in Comoros'

The African Island nation of Comoros is 'increasingly experiencing the effect of climate extremes, including heavy rains and disastrous floods,' said the Minister of Environment of the Government of Comoros, at the official launch for the climate change National Adaptation Plan process in Comoros. He stated; 'The National Adaptation Plan process is crucial in Comoros.' More than 60 international and national experts gathered in Moroni for three days, to focus on climate change adaptation requirements in the country, supported by UNDP/UNEP NAP-GSP, the UNDP Country Office in Comoros, and GIZ.

APAN Asia-Pacific Adaptation Forum builds partnerships for climate resilience

The fourth Asia Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum convened under the theme ‘Fostering strong partnerships to build a climate resilient Asia Pacific'. As the largest gathering of regional adaptation practitioners, the event brought together over 500 scientists, government officials, representatives from civil society organizations, the private sector and donor agencies from more than 30 countries to generate innovative solutions to address impacts of climate change.

Samoa starts cross-sectoral response to climate change adaptation

Samoa is set to adopt a whole-of-government approach to climate change adaptation through a US$12.3 million initiative, in partnership with UNDP. With financing from the Least Developed Country Countries Fund (LDCF), the Government will take critical steps to incorporate medium and long-term climate change and disaster-risk management priorities into the planning and budgeting processes of key economic sectors.
