The NAP-GSP held a Regional Training Workshop for Asia and the Pacific, to support countries to advance their NAPs and to enhance peer-to-peer exchange between countries, in October 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This workshop was organized by the joint UNDP/UNEP National Adaptation Plan – Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP) with financial support from the Special Climate Change Fund of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Korean Environment institute (KEI). The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), UN Habitat, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) also collaborated in this training. It took place from 20-21 October 2016.

Objectives of the workshop:  

i) To reflect on the opportunities arising from the Paris Agreement, as a means to advance national adaptation plans ii) To increase countries´ understanding of the NAPs process, as a means to accelerate adaptation implementation  iii) To take stock of what countries are doing on NAPs, exchange lessons learnt and experiences, and identify where additional external support is required.

Desired outputs:  

iv) A NAP workplan developed by each country, which includes: a stocktaking of current adaptation planning arrangements and capacity; identification of priorities to advance the NAP process and areas for external support; defines next steps for the short- to medium-term  v) Areas for targeted South-South information and experience exchange on adaptation planning identified and a proposed “buddy system” set up  

Participants:

23 countries from Asia-Pacific (up to three participants per country).

Partners:  

PROVIA, WHO, WMO, UN-HABITAT.
 
The workshop will also highlight support available through the NAP-GSP and partners to support countries in advancing their NAP process.
The workshop will include participants from all developing countries that are not LDCs of Asia and the Pacific. The workshop will be held in English.  
 
The workshop is being arranged to be held in Colombo, following on from the 5th Asia Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum coordinated by the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) which will be running from 17-19 October 2016.
